Welcome to the first issue. Halloween falls on Saturday, and the neighborhood kitchens seem to know it: a five-dollar cheese pizza on Centre Street on Monday, two-dollar oysters in Jamaica Plain three nights running, prime rib making its rounds, and a Sunday pasta dinner that has quietly become an institution. The best value in this week’s paper is not really a discount. It is a rotation. The Pleasant Cafe serves a different dinner every night, priced between sixteen and twenty-three dollars, as it has for years. The Haven, Jamaica Plain. Friday night, October 30: “A Haven Halloween Bash” with DJ Suazo — karaoke, cocktails, costumes and staff performances, from 8 p.m. It is ticketed: tickets on Eventbrite guarantee entry and include a spooky beverage. (617) 634-9184

Old Friend Pizza, coming to West Roxbury. The pop-up’s permanent shop opens Wednesday, October 28 — Wed–Sun, 5–8 p.m. — at 5272 Washington Street.

And a goodbye: Delfino, a Roslindale fixture for years, closed in July. Its sister restaurant, 753 South, carries on up the street.
